Highlights
- Australia has no 2013 budget because it was its first year; the report says so instead of hiding it in variance
- Built and validated as code; not yet opened in Power BI Desktop
Problem
Sales beat budget by 21% in FY2013, yet operating profit still missed by $1.13M. Finance needed to know which entity and P&L line caused it, how much was exchange rates, and how much was within management's control.
Approach
- Star schema from the AdventureWorksDW finance ledger; semantic model and report written as code (TMDL + PBIR) and checked with Microsoft's own model library
- Beginner to intermediate: KPI cards, P&L matrix with subtotals, slicers, conditional formatting, waterfall, drillthrough page, report-page tooltip, bookmarks
- Advanced: Time View calculation group (period, QTD, YTD, full year, YoY %), dynamic format strings, field parameters, what-if FX slider, RANKX scorecards, SVG bars as measures
- Expert: DAX user-defined functions, calendar-based time intelligence, visual calculations, object-level security for an external-auditor role, perspectives, an Indonesian translation and best-practice rule checks in CI

Outcome
- Exchange rates explain only −$69K of the −$1.13M miss; salaries alone are −$4.69M as headcount rose 48% against a 5% budgeted increase
- Canada is the largest single shortfall at −$1.55M; minority shareholders take $2.00M of $10.65M net income
- Model: 18 tables, 57 measures, 7 functions; 7 report pages, 138 visuals; both validators pass
