Formula 1 — 75 Years of Racing
Every Grand Prix from 1950 to 2024: 1,125 races, 861 drivers, 211 teams and 77 circuits, from 14 raw files to a star schema and a six-page Power BI report, with a driver ranking that removes the car's advantage.
Preview
Highlights
- Pit stops over 60 seconds are flagged as red-flag or repair stops so they don't distort team pit times
- Built and validated as code; not yet opened in Power BI Desktop
Problem
Seventy-five years of results can't be compared directly: the points system changed many times, cars broke down far more often in early decades, and the best car makes any driver look good.
Approach
- DuckDB star schema from 14 raw files with 12 data tests, including known champion counts (Fangio 5, Schumacher 7, Hamilton 7, Verstappen 4)
- Every result re-scored on today's 25-18-15… points so eras compare; 140 raw retirement reasons grouped into 7 outcomes
- Car-adjusted driver skill: a regression over 17,745 results that separates the driver from the team-season, ranked only with 40+ modelled races
- Six report pages: map, ribbon chart, wins heatmap, round-by-round title fight, lap-by-lap race story and pit-lane time by team, with season and race pickers

Outcome
- Car failures ended 38% of starts in the 1950s and 6.4% in the 2020s; finishers rose from 51% to 86%
- Pole became a win 42.3% of the time: 29% in the turbo era, 52% in the hybrid era
- With the car factored out, Fangio ranks first, with Stewart and Clark close behind
- Model: 14 tables, 21 relationships, 57 measures; 6 report pages; both validators pass
